Arctic Flora

‘I grew up surrounded by pins and cloudberry swamps. I made my first handcrafts in my mother's sewing room when I was a child –first soft toys and later clothes. As I grew up, my love for creativity and handcrafts never stopped. They have become my lifeline. I studied to become an artisan and then a designer. During my studies, I became acquainted with hemp textiles and wondered why this fibre was not used more widely. That wonderment turned into courage to follow the thread of life and start a business. My business is driven by quality, transparency and a connection with nature. The mystique and sensuality of nature never ceases to amaze me. Everything there has a purpose and a place, where the elements work together seamlessly. A product that functions well and is of high quality is beautiful in itself - that's enough’. -Tiina/Arctic Flora

Why choose hemp – 5 excellent reasons

1. FRESH WATER. Compared to cotton, the most widely cultivated textile fibre in the world, hemp requires much less water. Cotton is often cultivated in dry regions, so diverting fresh water to cotton fields is problematic for communities in the region, to say the least. Of course, hemp cannot be cultivated in the desert, but the water requirement is much lower compared cotton.

2. SOIL. Hemp grows strong roots and leafy foliage relatively quickly. Hence, a hemp field not only enhances the soil with its root system, but also effectively absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

3. PRODUCTION IN EUROPE. Hemp is also cultivated nearby, here in Europe. Near-production and investing in it reduces import from far away, while supporting employment and prosperity in the region.

4. SUSTAINABILITY. Hemp produces some of the strongest fibres in the plant world. Depending on how it is processed, it is possible to produce a very strong and thick fabric, but also a supple and soft one. Either way, it will last long and improve with use. The more you use and wash it, the more it softens.

5. VERSATILE USAGE. The use areas for raw materials derived from hemp are incredibly wide. Food, biofuels, construction materials, plastic substitutes and paper are all possible, just to scratch the surface.
