Scandinavian rugs and carpets

In Finland, people have made carpets for centuries. Traditionally, rugs and carpets are made of old use textiles and surplus material. These rag rugs are all familiar to us all. Fringes at the ends and varying colors will always create a unique appearance for the rag rugs.

Rag mats are usually made from old textiles such as clothes and sheets. Clothing and sheets are cut to the appropriate pieces as long as possible into strips, depending on the thickness of the material and the intended carpet thickness. However, the textiles should not be too thin, as they will not withstand the use of the carpet. Nowadays in the weaving of rugs is most commonly used as a waste of the textile industry, and there is some special weft for carpet weaving.

Even today, the manufacture of Scandinavian rugs is ecological. Our selection of mats uses an entirely new weft, which is, however, a surplus in the textile sector, the edge of the fabric deck. This allows the rug a high quality and eco-friendly material as well as a modern appearance. For example, the content of the TYLLi's rugs comes from the Turkish textile industry and is washed and stained in Finland, in Lappajärvi. The weft is not worn and soiled, but durable and of high quality.

The manufacture of nordic carpets has also changed for centuries. Once the looms were, as their name suggests, always wood and worked with the hands. Nowadays, professional carpet weaving is made of metal-based electrically-operated fabric trees that allow for efficient and high-quality working.

In our selections, you will find high-quality, genuine Scandinavian carpets. The mats are made by TYLLi in Finland Lahti and Forest Folk Finland, Ostrobothnia. They combine quality material with skillful craftsmanship. All carpets are woven in Finland, and the wefts are stained and pre-shrinking in Finland before weaving, so the carpet shrinkage in the washing is minimal. The material is also used in recycled and garment industry cotton surpluses and flax, which is cleaned, pre-shringed and stained in Finland before use.
